The first question we are usually asked is, ‘What thread count are your sheets?”
Ok, so our bed linen comes in a number of different thread counts. Our EveryNight Organics bed sheets in sateen cotton have a thread count of 375, our Premium range of sateen cotton sheets sets and quilt covers have a thread count of 750 thread, and our Fog and Harbour organic percale cotton sheet sets and quilt covers have a thread count of 250.
But our answer is usually followed by ‘But why don’t we make them in 1000+ thread count?’
The short answer is: Because it’s really not about thread count!
High thread counts can certainly make for better sheets, but it's the quality of thread that matters most. In fact, a sheet of a better-quality fibre with a lower thread count will feel softer and stand up to washing better than a sheet of a lower-quality fibre with a higher thread count.
And besides thread count, here's what you need to pay attention to when you're choosing sheets:
Cotton-polyester blend sheets are wrinkle-resistant, durable (polyester lasts longer than cotton), and relatively inexpensive (up to half the cost of all-cotton). But if you're looking for that cool, soft feel, nothing beats 100 percent cotton. You'll hardly ever wake up clammy on cotton sheets, since the fibre wicks moisture away from your skin. Because cotton sheets are a water-loving fibre, they release dirt easily when wet, meaning they are less likely to stain that polyester blends.
All types of cotton share these wonderful traits, but long-staple (or long-fibre) cotton makes for a noticeably softer sheet, and the surface won't pill and lint like one woven from shorter fibres.
At Sheets on the Line we love the luxuriously soft feel of our GOTS certified organic cotton with its long thread that is grown without the harsh chemicals of conventional cotton.
The weave affects the way a sheet feels, the way it looks, its longevity, and its price. Basic plain weaves, which are woven from an equal number of vertical and horizontal yarns, are least expensive and may not rate a mention on the label.
Percale is an upscale plain weave with a thread count of 180 or higher and is known for its longevity and crisp feel. Our matte Percale features a classic, one-over-one-under weave. Just like your favourite white button-down shirt: crisp, clean and liveable. Our Percale fabric is vintage washed for the ultimate in comfort and will continue to soften as it’s laundered.
Sateen weaves have more vertical than horizontal yarns. The higher proportion of vertical threads results in an extremely soft fabric. Our Sateen is made of the highest quality 100% organic long staple cotton. The weave creates a subtle sheen that feels super soft and smooth against the skin. Sateen is naturally wrinkle-resistant, and its sheen will diminish with washing and use.
Most conventional cotton sheets are treated with chemicals (including chlorine, formaldehyde, and silicon) to keep them from shrinking, losing their shape, and wrinkling. Some are treated with alkalis to produce a sheen. This is not the case with Sheets on the Line's organic cotton bed linen which is certified organic and made to the highest standards.
Here at Sheets on the Line, we are very well known for the gorgeous feel of our bed linen and always balance our fabrics so they are both lovely to the touch, affordable, ethical and long-lasting.
